The Government Efficiency Department (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, is working to reduce federal spending, reduce government workforce and increase the efficiency of federal agencies.
Doge was created by President Donald Trump through an executive order he signed on the day of inauguration. According to the order, Doge will be a temporary organization inside the White House that will exceed 18 months until July 4, 2026, carrying out its mission.
The group has faced criticism for its access to federal systems, including the Treasury Department payment system, and moves to cancel federal contracts and make cuts to various agencies. A treasure official told lawmakers in a letter to Congress that DOGE has “only reading access to the payment system.
In the weeks since its inception, Doge has canceled a number of diversity, capital and inclusion initiatives (Dei) in federal agencies, as well as certain counseling contracts, canceling rents for underlying federal buildings while also working for consolidated copied agencies and programs.

Has what cut or target Doge?
Doge has focused most of its initial work on the cancellation of Dei programs, contract consultation and lease conclusions for federal buildings.
Doge wrote on Tuesday that he canceled 12 contracts in the government services administration and the education department that resulted in a total savings of about $ 30 million. He also canceled 12 unused leases for $ 3 million savings.
On Monday, Doge said he canceled 36 contracts, leading to savings of about $ 165 million to six agencies.

Doge wrote in a post on Sunday that she has canceled 22 rent in the last six days, saving $ 44.6 million.
On January 29, Doge said in a post on X that he had eliminated 85 contracts regarding diversity, capital, inclusion and access (Deia) to more than a dozen federal agencies worth approximately $ 1 billion. He also canceled a $ 45 million scholarship program for students in Burma.

Musk and Doge are also focused on the US Agency for International Development (USAID) as a target for possible savings. USAID was created in the early 1960s to provide help around the world, especially for poor and underdeveloped regions. The agency currently operates from 60 nations and employs 10,000 people, according to the Congress Research Service.
USAID’s website was darkened and its employees were banned from entering its headquarters on Monday, while others were waiting for their work. The Trump administration announced on Tuesday that all USAID direct rental staff will be put on administrative leave starting on Friday.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been appointed director of the Independent Agency, and the Trump administration has signaled some parts of USAID can be absorbed by the State Department.

How much has Doge saved?
Doge posted on January 28th that the group is saving the federal government approximately $ 1 billion a day, mainly from the ban on employment of people in unnecessary positions, deleting dei and stopping improper pay for foreign organizations, all in accordance with President of President Orders. “

Doge has not provided a detailed separation of his cuts, so it is unclear how he is counting the savings he is claiming.

He previously suggested that lowering the average of $ 4 billion a day would be necessary to reduce the federal deficit by $ 1 trillion to 2026 fiscal, but he did not post the continuation if the goal was achieved.

Most of the federal spending comes from mandatory expenditure programs such as social and media, as well as interest in national debt.
Doge has so far focused on the areas involved in discretionary expenses, which is subject to annual divisions from the Congress.
